Worship
The definition of worship in the evangelical movement has been defined as singing or praising God in song. However in scripture we find worship is a lifestyle. In John 4:24 He explains, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” Throughout the gospel of John he gives his readers a clear distinction between walking in darkness and walking in truth and light. The question then is, what is truth? John also answers this question in chapter 14:6. Jesus is the truth, the way and the life. Believing and knowing this truth is only brought about by the work of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore worship is knowing and being known by God. Paul desperately pleads with us the joy of knowing Christ. “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ”
True worship bears fruit, a radical self-sacrificing love and joy in living in communion with God. True worshipers see Christ more beautiful, more satisfying and rewarding than what this world has to offer because they are living in the spirit and truth.True worshipers do not let their right hand do what their left hand is doing. Matt (6:3)
True worshipers are not those who demonstrate their “righteousness in public yet live like the world behind closed doors” (Matt 6:5). True worshipers experience communion with the Holy Trinity alone when no one is watching. (Matt 6:6) Worship is not defined by singing lyrics. Worship is marked by living a life of obedience in every task of life (1 Cor 10:31).
